This brick smokehouse probably dates from the late 18th or very early 19th century. The two windows on its east wall almost certainly represent alterations to the original structure. Smokehouses were used for curing and storing meats, such as pork, a main staple in the diet of slaves, servants, and plantation owners and their families.
