We welcome group tours as well as special tours, involving specific topics such as the families of Poplar Hill, plantation life, or house architecture. These can be arranged by contacting the museum staff at: 301-856-0358.

A tour of Poplar Hill includes information on the history of the house from the time of the Darnalls through the last resident famly, the Waltons. Docents point out many of the unique architectural features of Poplar Hill that have survived more than 200 years of existence.

Poplar Hill is rich with history that touches on both the local, regional, and national landscape. We, the museum staff, continue to look for ways to share that information with our visitors. This year, we begin offering the following special focus tour as a way of sharing with you, some of that history.

Tour: The African American Experience at Poplar Hill
Every fourth Sunday, March through December

Along with the Darnalls, Poplar Hill was also home to a community of African-American families whose lives shaped the events of the plantation, the commuinty and the county. Darnall descendants owned more than 160 slaves at the time of the Civil War. This tour explores their life at Poplar Hill, including the lives of particular individuals, such as Lewis Brown, a garderner, and Henry Brown, who helped organize the first school for African-Americans after emancipation. The tour includes a walk along the yard area past the original smokehouse, dairy, and slave infirmary. This tour is offered every Fourth Sunday from noon to 4:00, with the last tour beginning at 3:00 p.m.
