Volunteering at Poplar Hill

Volunteers are very important to Poplar Hill on His Lordship's Kindness. Their help is genuinely appreciated and vital to fulfilling its mission. We invite anyone who is interested in becoming a part of our volunteer core to call 301-856-0358 to schedule an appointment and learn about the many of volunteer opportunities available at this National Historic Landmark. Presently we have openings for the following scheduled and special volunteer posiitons listed below.

Interpreter/Docent/Tour Guide:
If you enjoy teaching and interacting with all age groups, you will find pleasure in being an interpreter. Our interpreters are asked to provide tours of the house and the property, keep current on the history of the house and region, attend docent meetings, and be available to give tours at least once a month from March through December. Ownership of a period costume is not required. Docents should be at least 15 years old. Ongoing training is provided on a scheduled or informal basis.

Public Programs Volunteer:
These volunteers help lead planned programs, assist with parking, collect entrance tickets, or greet the public at special events.

General Assistance Volunteers:
General Assistance Volunteers provide help in repairing items, office work, and maintaining and beautifying the grounds.

Sewing and Textiles:
Craftspersons needed with special expertise in sewing costumes, or operating spinning wheels and/or looms. If you have a special interest in spinning and weaving and have some time to help, please give us a call at 301-856-0358.

Woodworkers:
There are volunteer opportunities for all types of cabinetmakers and carpenters interested in working on a Georgian house and its furnishings. We particularly need volunteers in woodwork for minor "non-restoration" furniture and building repair, and helping making signs. Expand your knowledge of historic woodworking techniques and restoration while assisting a non-profit foundation dedicated to preserving a National Historic Landmark.

Gardeners:
We are looking for volunteers to help us maintain our herb garden. Our goal is to have an annual herb/garden event and to develop an active interpretive program based on the wide variety of plant life at Poplar Hill. There are lots of other possibilities, so please give us a call at 301-856-0358 or email us at poplar.hill@verizon.net

Carriage Museum Volunteers
Interested in coaches, harness, carriage-making tools, or horses? We are looking for motivated volunteers to help research, maintain, and interpret our 16 vehicles for the Carriage Museum at Poplar Hill. Call us about this unique opportunity at 301-856-0358.

Benefits:
His Lordship's Kindness's volunteers are offered free admission to programs, share in the love of history, learn new skills and meet people, receive training from experts, participate in workshops and special programs, and have fun.
